ITALY, Po Delta. Goro, vicinity Ferrara. Tree stumps - the remains of ancient woodlands, destroyed by farmers converting their land into poplar plantations. The trees are cut down and thrown into the River Po which carries then hundreds of kilometres to the sea. Poplar trees are quick growing and are used in the manufacture of toilet paper - which also finds its way into the rivers after use. CDREF00553.
