SHETLAND ISLANDS - OIL DISASTER. Scientists performing autopsies on oiled birds. The results will be stored in a data base and the information will be used to assess the impact of the oil spill on bird populations. On 5th January 1993, the oil tanker the Braer ran aground in the Shetland Islands spilling 85,000 tonnes of light crude oil. CDREF00566.
